Old Berwick Historical Society / Counting House Museum
A historic mill building housing historical artifacts from coastal Maine and neighboring New Hampshire
The Counting House Museum doesn't just house historical artifacts from coastal Maine and neighboring New Hampshire. It's history itself.
The building was the counting house for the huge Portsmouth Manufacturing Cotton Mill. At its height, the mill processed 1300 bales of cotton every year – most from Southern plantations. That cotton produced 2 million yards of sheeting annually. The mill closed in 1893 and its buildings were torn down - all save the Counting House. Since 1962, it's been preserved and maintained by the volunteer members of the Old Berwick Historical Society.
Inside, the Society hosts permanent and temporary exhibits chronicling the history of the area and the people who live and work there.
