Swan Island, Kennebec River
Swan Island welcomes hikers, campers, birders, anglers, wildlife watchers and explorers.
An Island in Time, Swan Island is located in the Kennebec River in Richmond, just 20 minutes south of Augusta and 45 minutes north of Portland. There are nesting bald eagles, deer and waterfowl; 5 historic homes dating back to the 1700s; hiking, camping, canoe rentals and various events. The island is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offers gorgeous scenery and great photo opportunities. Visitors may visit using canoes or kayaks or reserve a ferry ride. They can even bring a mountain bike to ride the island's 4-mile dirt road.

- Hours Open daily from May 1- through the end of October. To protect the Island's wildlife, pets are not allowed. Ferry service across the river (5 minute ride) is provided by reservation only.
