Wiscasset

The charming village of Wiscasset sits along the tidal waters of the Sheepscot River estuary, home to a vibrant waterfront community with a rich history and culture.

Often called one of the prettiest villages in Maine, Wiscasset is only an hour from Portland, and while many people visit for the popular lobster rolls at Red’s Eats, there is so much more to enjoy.

Things to Do in Wiscasset

You can visit a number of museums and historic homes in the village of Wiscasset, Maine, including the Lincoln County Museum and Old Jail  and the Lincoln County Courthouse, which is the oldest functioning courthouse in New England. You can see examples of 19th-century Federal-style mansions at  Castle Tucker and the  Nickels-Sortwell House.

Across the river in Edgecomb is Fort Edgecomb with one of the nation’s best preserved blockhouses, built in 1809. The park is perfect for picnics by the river. You and your family can also take on the three-level ropes course, zip line and adventure park at  Monkey C Monkey Do.

Ride the historic narrow-gauge railway from the nearby town of Alna. The Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway offers steam-powered rides that are fun for all ages. If you appreciate antiquity, Wiscasset is full of antique shops. Enjoy shopping at the Wiscasset Antiques Mall, the Wiscasset Antique Center, or the Marston House for French antiques and textiles (they also have a small bed & breakfast) – open seasonally. Or pop into Main Street’s many shops like Rock Paper Scissors, Moulinette and Little Maine Mercantile. Stroll over to the Maine Art Gallery which features artwork from hundreds of local artists with ever-changing exhibits.

You’ll work up an appetite here so enjoy a meal at the many Wiscasset restaurants including favorites like the Sea Basket or Sprague’s Lobster – for all things seafood, or Sarah’s Café where there’s something for everyone. The Maine Tasting Center offers delicious Maine-made food and drink, and workshops to learn about cooking with these wonderful ingredients!
