Apple Picking in Maine
Is there anything more quintessentially “fall” than apple picking? The changing leaves highlight your drive to the orchard with reds and golds, and the air is full of the sweet smell of cider, and if you are lucky, donuts and pies. Maine has an abundance of pick-your-own apple orchards so you’re sure to find the perfect one to enjoy on a fall day. Here are some orchards throughout Maine that offer a bit more than just apple picking!
Orchard Ridge Farm in Gorham is on 38 acres of hilly orchards and wooded forest with an incredible variety of u-pick apples. The Orchard Ridge Farm Store & Kitchen is open year-round offering farm-fresh eggs and an array of local meats, cheeses, produce, honey, maple products, baked goods, jams, ferments, snacks, and more.
New Gloucester’s Shaker Village, the only active Shaker community in the world, offers pick-your-own apples in their historic orchard, as well as tours. There is also a museum that is open to the public, free of charge, and a store to purchase baked goods, jams, and much more. Handicap accessible.
Libby & Son’s orchard in Limerick has over 40 acres. During apple picking season, there is freshly pressed old-fashioned apple cider. Visitors can watch and enjoy homemade apple cider donuts or pumpkin donuts being made daily as well as other treats. There is often live music and food trucks on the weekends.
Morris Hill Orchard in Farmington not only has apples to pick but they have a cider bar, too. You can try their fresh or hard cider and enjoy wood-fired pizza on the weekends. In the Kennebec Valley town of Madison, North Star Orchards has 35 acres of apple trees and an incredible farm store with a variety of gifts, canned goods and fresh produce.
Head to Clark’s Cove Farm in Walpole and pick your own apples from their 27 varieties. Enjoy the magnificent vistas of rolling meadows, wooded hills and 700 feet of waterfront at this picturesque orchard. They invite visitors to walk the trails, or fish, canoe or kayak in the cove as well.
Head north and find plenty to do at Treworgy Family Orchards in Levant. Get lost in their national award-winning corn maze and there are apples and pumpkins to pick. The farm store is well-stocked and you can enjoy pizza and ice cream as well. In Caribou, McElwain’s Strawberry Farm also has pick-your-own apples and pumpkins in the fall. Their farm stand is full of produce and other tasty treats. They even have an apple sling so you can try your hand at target practice.
