Maine’s Portland Symphony Orchestra 100th Anniversary Celebration: Guest Yo-Yo Ma, Star Wars Screening and So Much More
A vibrant lineup of music, dance and celebratory community events are planned for The Portland Symphony Orchestra’s (PSO’s) 100th anniversary season (September 2024-June 2025). The PSO combines international excellence – such as a concert featuring world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo-Ma – with the easily accessed talent of local string ensembles that will pop up at frequented spots throughout the state. This is all in addition to jubilant community events (such as a sing-along of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony), festive holiday performances featuring Cirque performers and a special screening of “Star Wars: A New Hope,” that will feature live performance of the monumental musical scores composed by John Williams.
The 100th season honors the orchestra’s past, present and future, and PSO has dubbed the theme of the season: “Celebrate, Grow, Engage.” As such, in addition to the celebratory events planned, there will also be opportunities for learning and connection, like performances showcasing new works from diverse artists and PSO “Discovery Concerts” that welcome young children who wish to get closer to the stage. There is truly something for every member of the family!
The Portland Symphony Orchestra has early roots in Maine’s performing arts scene. Founded in 1924, it is one of the largest performing arts organizations in the state with over 80 professional musicians. Subscriptions for the 2024-2025 season are available and can help you secure your seats now (or get early access to tickets). Single tickets go on sale through PortTIX on June 17, 2024.
