These mountains are part of the Appalachian Mountain system, the oldest mountains in the U.S. Katahdin possesses the highest peak in the state (5,267 feet) and is the northernmost point of the Appalachian Trail. The mountain is a popular and difficult hike. The Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument offers plentiful and varied hiking, mountain biking and paddling.
To the west of Katahdin is the Moosehead Lake Region with the opportunity to hike six mountains in the Moosehead Pinnacle Pursuit, including stunning Mount Kineo.
You don’t need to tackle the tallest mountain in Maine to enjoy some of the best mountain hikes. Smaller mountains found in parks like Grafton Notch State Park and Mt. Blue State Park in the Western Mountains offer excellent trails for all abilities and challenge levels. Hiking Maine mountains can be a year-round activity with the right gear and skills, too.
With mountains comes snow! The ski resorts in Maine are well-blanketed each year with plenty of powder, and some of the best skiing and snowboarding in New England.
When you’re not adventuring, explore the charming mountain towns in Maine. In Rangeley, the lakes frame one side of the town, Saddleback Mountain the other. This mountain town draws visitors year-round for the endless outdoor recreation options available, whether on the water, in the woods or on the mountain. Bethel is a quintessential New England mountain town near Sunday River with a village dotted of shops and restaurants, and even the Maine Mineral and Gem Museum. The town of Bridgton boasts views of Mount Washington and the White Mountains from its streets. And at the base of Sugarloaf Mountain lies the equally delightful towns of Kingfield and Carrabassett. This region is known for all the fun the mountains can offer—in every season.
