Penobscot River Trails
Open seven days a week, from dawn to dusk, the Penobscot River Trails is a destination to be enjoyed in every season. Simply sign in at the Visitor’s Center, rent any equipment you need and off you go!
Located in Grindstone, outside of the town of Millinocket, 25 kilometers (about 16 miles) of carriage trails pass through pristine forests and along the Penobscot River and in the spring, summer and fall, you can walk or run and mountain bike on them. During the winter the trails are groomed for classic XC skiing. You can snowshoe along any of the trails but there are 5 miles of a packed snowshoe trail. Walking on the trails isn’t permitted in the winter and no pets are allowed.
From the Visitor’s Center, you can choose a trail length best suited to your plans. For a quick jaunt into the woods, you can choose the Long Logan Loop, which is 1.85 km, or head out to the Pines and Ridges Warming Hut - 12 km roundtrip.
There are two warming huts – one 6 km from the Center, the other near the trail’s end, 14.7 km from the center, providing a welcome rest if you’re tackling the longest trail out and back.
The Visitor’s Center offers rentals (by donation only) of mountain bikes with helmets, knee pads & shin pads in warmer months and XC ski and snowshoe rentals in the winter. Rental ski gear sizes range from children aged 5 to full-grown adults.
Further north, you can enjoy the latest addition to the trails, the Seboeis Riverside Trail. This 7.2-mile trail travels directly along the Seboeis River and intersects with Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument and has one warming hut, and a first-come-first-served campsite at Grand Pitch.
Before heading out, be sure to check trail conditions on their website.
