Historic Lodging in Maine

Maine’s historic architecture is one of the many appealing features of the state – farms and homes often look straight out of the 18th or 19th centuries, and more than 1,600 properties in Maine are on the National Register of Historic Places. A handful of these are also B&Bs, inns or hotels that welcome guests into the lovingly preserved past.

The Claremont Hotel

Most of the historic accommodations in Maine are in what were originally captain’s homes or private mansions but the Claremont Hotel has been a summer retreat for guests since 1884. Perfectly situated on Somes Sound in Southwest Harbor with stellar ocean views, guests of the hotel will find plenty to do on site with a wide range of amenities that includes rowboats, bicycles, a tennis court, a dock, and two restaurants – Xanthus Restaurant and Bar and The Boathouse.

Grey Havens

The Grey Havens Inn has also been welcoming guests for more than 100 years. This bed and breakfast was built in 1904 and has been serving guests ever since. Positioned on Georgetown Island, this hotel has magnificent views of the ocean that can be seen from an expansive covered porch. The unique architecture is a landmark for fishermen and lobstermen navigating the Maine ocean. Reid State Park is only 1.5 miles down the road for a fantastic Maine beach experience.

The Brewster Inn

Originally constructed in the 1870s, the Brewster Inn was built for Governor Ralph Owen Brewster and the home was the scene of socializing and parties, as well as political gatherings. The mansion was reopened as an inn in 1988, now providing tranquility to weary travelers. Outside of Bangor, the inn is situated near numerous outdoor recreation opportunities.

Norumbega Inn

Norumbega Inn is in the High Street Historic District of Camden. The inn was built in 1886 by Joseph Stearns based on castles he saw as he traveled throughout Europe. For almost 100 years, the “Castle,” as it is commonly referred to, was privately owned until 1984 when it was converted into a bed and breakfast. Norumbega Inn overlooks Penobscot Bay and offers 11 guest rooms, including two spacious suites.

The Cleftstone Manor

The Cleftstone Manor was one of the few mansions to escape Bar Harbor’s devasting fire in 1947, which destroyed most of the Victorian manors built for the wealthiest residents during the Gilded Age. Built in 1881 and furnished with antiques, this bed and breakfast offers charm and history.
