Maine Ceramic Arts
Maine is home to many gifted potters and ceramic artists and they are located throughout the state, from Machias to the mountains in the west. It is here these artists have found both the inspiration they need and a supportive community that encourages and challenges them to grow in their craft.
The state’s regional clay artists can be found in small roadside studios and shops and galleries, as well as at annual ceramic events. One of the country’s preeminent ceramic residency programs, the Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts, holds two popular annual events. Their Salad Days picnic is held the second Saturday of each July and guests get a handmade plate created by an artist in residency to load up with delicious local foods and then keep as a usable souvenir.
Don’t miss the annual Maine Pottery Tour in May when dozens of participating artists open their studios to the public so you can meet them, buy pottery, and see demonstrations on the wheel or the kilns at work. The Maine Craft Association hosts the Maine Craft Weekend in October.
With works that range from utilitarian to traditional to fine art, visitors can find Maine’s ceramic artists and inviting studios at Columbia Falls Pottery in downtown Machias; and at Edgecomb Potters. Internationally recognized ceramic artists like Jemma Gascoine’s work can be seen at Monson Arts – a new artists’ residency and arts center – and architectural ceramic tile artist, George Mason in Nobleboro, has open houses and studio sales throughout the year. Monkitree in Gardiner, and the Maine Potters Market in Portland are all wonderful places to discover your favorite ceramic artists from Maine.
