Lighthouses

With thousands of miles of rugged coastline, you’ll discover more than 60 iconic lighthouses in Maine. These historic beacons direct maritime travelers to a safe harbor—and there’s even one on Cobbosseecontee Lake, the only landlocked lighthouse in the state.

Get an in-depth glimpse into the history of these shoreline structures (and fun facts like how to distinguish the orders of Fresnel lenses—the “jewel of the lighthouse”) at one of the maritime museums in Maine. Several lighthouses even have on-site museums including Marshall Point Light Station and the Portland Head Light, and don’t miss the Maine Lighthouse Museum in Rockland.

Follow a ready-made itinerary of lighthouse trip ideas throughout the state. These handy guides offer tips for places to go grab a bite or other points of interest near several of Maine’s most notable lighthouses.

Or go on a lighthouse tour. The Burnt Island Lighthouse Tour starts with an island cruise and once ashore, you will enjoy a living history tour of the restored lighthouse and grounds. The Friends of Wood Island Lighthouse offer guided tours on the island off the coast of Biddeford Pool.

Most of Maine’s lighthouses aren’t generally open to the public, but one day each year, more than 20 locations invite guests to see them up close. Maine Open Lighthouse Day is held every September and you can climb many light towers and enjoy a rare peek at these coastal guardians.
