Winter Beach Walks
As the cold weather returns, the popular beaches in the Southern region of Maine become quiet places of respite. The beauty of the Maine coast is perennial, but winter is perfect for beach walks. It is not uncommon to find yourself practically alone on the long stretches of white sand found in Old Orchard, Ogunquit, Kittery and Wells.
Dress warmly, take your time and enjoy beachcombing or watching Maine surfers who stop at nothing to catch a good wave, not even chilly temperatures. You may discover you like Maine’s beaches best in the winter!
Old Orchard Beach—with its seven miles of soft sand to enjoy—is ideal for those seeking a long, peaceful walk on chilly days. Catch the sun as it rises over Seapoint Beach in Kittery as you stroll along the pebbles past the dunes. Ogunquit Beach gets rave reviews any time of year, and in Wells you can wend your way along the seven miles of oceanfront—including Wells Beach, Moody Beach, Crescent Beach and Drake’s Island Beach.
Birding in winter is best along Maine’s beaches. Bring a pair of binoculars and spot sea ducks bobbing on the waves and watch the sandpipers dash about the surf. Loons, who in the summer wear fancy spotted black and white, don mellower colors for their winters at sea.
Dogs are not allowed on most Maine beaches during the summer months, or only during certain hours, so winter is the time to treat your pup to a salty sea walk. Dogs are welcome on most beaches all day after Labor Day so bring a leash and always pick up after Fido.
